Any truck/tractor trailer combination
A combination of motor vehicle and towed vehicles where the towed vehicles exceed a total gross weight of 4,600 kilograms (10,000 lbs) and has air brakes
A vehicle pulling double trailers
With a full Class A licence you can also drive:

A Class A licence does not allow you to drive a bus carrying passengers, a motorcycle or a moped.

*Driving Matters is not an Accredited School*

Driving Matters can offer valuable information in preparing for your up-coming road test. What schedules to bring, items needed, terminology, uncoupling, coupling, backing, on road expectations. You provide the vehicle and we will do the rest!

Restricted Class A licence

What you can drive

The restricted Class A (condition R) licence is meant for drivers operating smaller truck-trailer combinations, such as a recreational, horse or utility trailer.

You can also drive:

a car or light truck covered by a Class G licence
heavy trucks covered by the Class D truck licence
What you can’t drive

With a restricted Class A licence, you can’t:

pull a trailer equipped with air brakes
drive a full-size tractor-trailer
drive a vehicle pulling a double trailer
train another driver on a vehicle that requires full Class A privileges to drive
Requirements

To obtain a restricted Class A licence (condition R), you must:

be at least 18 years old
hold a valid Ontario licence other than G1, G2, M, M1 or M2
pass a vision test
submit a valid medical report
pass a knowledge test about operating large trucks and tractor-trailers
pass a road testusing a vehicle that meets the requirements for Class A (R)
Note: It is not mandatory for the Entry Level Training Course for an A restricted class of license

To remove the “R” condition and upgrade your licence to a full Class A, you must successfully complete a road test using a vehicle with a full Class A vehicle configuration. This includes:

A trailer with a Manufacturer’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (MGVWR) of at least 4,600 kg.
A full air brake system on both the tractor and trailer.
As of July 1, 2017 the Ministry of Transportation implemented a Mandatory Entry Level Training Program.

This applies to anyone that wishes to upgrade their license class to A. They must attend a Ministry approved Accredited College Facility.

How can Driving Matters Help
After completion, we can assist with circle check, in cab, interior, uncoupling, coupling, backing and road test preparation.

If you have completed your initial process of submission of medical, vision and knowledge tests and are interested in a A (restricted) class, we can help.

It’s not required to attend facilities mentioned above.

The vehicle configuration of MGVW ( manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight) must be more than 11,000 kgs (24,000 lbs).

A full hands on approach of items located on the schedule 1 will be outlined. Some procedures differ slightly in terms of exterior, in cab, interior how uncoupling and coupling need to be completed.

We do have current driver handbooks to loan. A small retainer is required.

You must provide the vehicle and we will do the rest!
